The Yala Peak trek itinerary is 10 days from Kathmandu — one drive day in, seven days on the Langtang Valley trail and the summit, and one drive day back. Each day has a specific purpose. The drive sets the start point. Approach days then build altitude progressively. Specifically, the Kyanjin Ri hike prepares the body for High Camp. Summit day delivers a 5,732m panorama across the Langtang massif and into Tibet.

Furthermore, no NMA permit is required, no Lukla flights are involved, and all climbing equipment is included — making this the cleanest structured trekking peak itinerary in Nepal. Consequently, this guide covers every day in full so you arrive at Syabrubesi knowing exactly what each stage involves and what it gives back.

How this itinerary is structured

The Yala Peak trek itinerary is structured around two non-negotiable elements. First: two nights at Kyanjin Gompa, with the Day 5 Kyanjin Ri hike to 4,773m making full use of the “climb high, sleep low” principle. Second: the full afternoon equipment briefing at High Camp on Day 6, which is the only technical preparation session of the expedition and never abbreviated. Furthermore, the Day 7 descent from 5,732m all the way back to Kyanjin Gompa means no overnight above 4,800m at any stage — the most conservative altitude management of any Nepal trekking peak itinerary. Consequently, trekkers who follow the pacing on every approach day and complete the Day 5 hike have the strongest acclimatisation foundation available within a 10-day schedule.

Yala Peak Trek Itinerary — Day-by-Day

Day 01 — Drive Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (1,460m)

Drive: 7–8 hrs | Meals: Lunch, Dinner | Stay: Teahouse, Syabrubesi

The shared jeep or bus departs Kathmandu early morning on the Trishuli Valley highway — a scenic 155km drive through Newar towns, river gorges, and Tamang settlements that climbs progressively toward the Langtang border region. No early morning flights, no Ramechhap overnight transfer, no mountain aviation anxiety. Syabrubesi at 1,460m is the expedition’s starting point — a genuine mountain town with a national park checkpoint and a rhythm that immediately signals you are no longer in Kathmandu. Furthermore, the afternoon in Syabrubesi is used productively: equipment check with the guide, crampon-boot compatibility confirmed, and summit day plan introduced for the first time. Consequently, Day 1 sets the tone for the expedition rather than wasting a day in transit.

Day 02 — Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel (2,200m)

Altitude: 2,200m | Trek: 6 hrs | Meals: B, L, D | Stay: Teahouse, Lama Hotel

The trail enters Langtang National Park above Syabrubesi and climbs through subtropical and temperate forest along the Langtang Khola river gorge. Six hours of predominantly continuous uphill — the longest approach day in the itinerary and the first honest test of baseline fitness. Furthermore, the forest between Syabrubesi and Lama Hotel is one of the most visually rich sections of the trek — bamboo groves, giant rhododendron canopy in April, and the river far below through occasional clearings. Consequently, pace Day 2 deliberately and drink water consistently throughout. The body is finding the expedition rhythm and today determines how Day 3 feels.

Day 03 — Lama Hotel to Langtang Village (3,430m)

Altitude: 3,430m | Trek: 4 hrs | Meals: B, L, D | Stay: Teahouse, Langtang Village

The trail climbs above the forest into alpine meadow and the Langtang Valley opens dramatically above Ghoda Tabela — yak pastures, stone chortens, prayer flags, and the Langtang Liriru (7,227m) north face filling the northern sky for the first time. Langtang Village was completely destroyed in the April 2015 earthquake and rebuilt entirely by the community. Furthermore, arriving there carries a specific historical weight that no other Nepal trekking route replicates — the rebuilt village stands as proof that some communities choose to return to the most beautiful places even when they are also the most dangerous. Consequently, take time at Langtang Village in the afternoon before the high-altitude days begin above.

Day 04 — Langtang Village to Kyanjin Gompa (3,850m)

Altitude: 3,850m | Trek: 3–4 hrs | Meals: B, L, D | Stay: Teahouse, Kyanjin Gompa

The trail continues up the valley through yak pastures and mani walls to Kyanjin Gompa — one of the finest Himalayan base villages in Nepal. At 3,850m the ancient Kyanjin Monastery (operating since the 17th century), the world’s highest cheese factory, and the direct line-of-sight to Langtang Liriru make this a village with genuine depth rather than just a teahouse cluster. Furthermore, two nights here gives real time to explore — the monastery, the cheese factory, and the glacier viewpoint above the village. Consequently, arrive early, eat the yak cheese at least once, visit the monastery before evening prayer, and rest well. Tomorrow’s acclimatisation hike is the most important preparation day of the expedition.

Day 05 — Acclimatisation: Kyanjin Ri (4,773m)

High point: 4,773m | Hike: 4–5 hrs | Meals: B, L, D | Stay: Teahouse, Kyanjin Gompa

The Kyanjin Ri hike is non-negotiable in the Yala Peak trek itinerary and treated as mandatory by Mountain Hike Nepal regardless of how strong the team feels on Day 4. The ridge above Kyanjin Gompa gains 923m as a day trip while sleeping at 3,850m — the classic “climb high, sleep low” acclimatisation that measurably prepares the body for 4,800m and 5,732m in a way no amount of lower-altitude training can replicate. Furthermore, the panorama from Kyanjin Ri — Langtang Liriru and Dorje Lakpa at close range, the Langtang glacier filling the valley below, Tibet border peaks to the north — is the finest viewpoint on the entire expedition below the summit itself. Consequently, pace this hike conservatively, drink 3–4 litres throughout, and return to Kyanjin by early afternoon for a full rest period before High Camp day.

Day 06 — Kyanjin Gompa to Yala High Camp (4,800m)

Altitude: 4,800m | Trek: 4–5 hrs | Meals: B, L, D | Stay: Tented camp, Yala High Camp

The trail climbs from Kyanjin Gompa through the upper Langtang Valley to Yala High Camp at 4,800m — a tented camp on the slopes below the peak with the summit face visible directly above. Arrive by early afternoon. Rest in the tent. The afternoon equipment briefing covers crampon fitting and technique on real terrain, ice axe use and self-arrest, rope management, summit day timing, and turn-around procedures — every climber individually, not a group overview. Furthermore, Mountain Hike Nepal’s climbing guide runs this session with hands-on practice rather than a lecture. Consequently, treat the briefing as the summit preparation it genuinely is — trekkers who engage seriously describe the summit approach as manageable rather than frightening. Eat a full warm meal. Sleep by 8:00pm. The alarm sounds at 4:00am.

Day 07 — Summit Day: Yala Peak (5,732m) and Descent to Kyanjin Gompa (3,850m)

Summit: 5,732m | Total: 10–12 hrs | Meals: B, L, D | Stay: Teahouse, Kyanjin Gompa

Summit day is the hardest and most rewarding day in the Yala Peak trek itinerary. The 4:00am alarm is jarring — cold darkness, -15°C outside the sleeping bag, and the headlamp beam showing only snow and rock. The first 30 minutes from camp to the snow line are non-technical and warm the body. Crampons on at the snow line. From there the route climbs 932m to 5,732m on consolidated snow and moderate scree — the guide leads, the pace is deliberate, and the effort above 5,400m requires full attention and controlled breathing.

The summit at 5,732m: Langtang Liriru (7,227m) directly northwest at close range. Shishapangma (8,027m) in Tibet directly north — Nepal’s only trekking peak with a direct Tibet border sightline. Dorje Lakpa and Ganesh Himal to the east. The full Langtang and Jugal Himalaya in every direction. After the summit, descend to High Camp, collect equipment, and continue all the way down to Kyanjin Gompa at 3,850m — a 1,882m total descent. Furthermore, trekking poles are essential for this descent and pace on the way down matters as much as on the ascent. Consequently, the guide sets the descent pace and that pace is followed without exception.

Day 08 — Kyanjin Gompa to Langtang Village (3,430m)

Altitude: 3,430m | Trek: 5–6 hrs | Meals: B, L, D | Stay: Teahouse, Langtang Village

The summit is done. The descent carries a completely different quality from the ascent — the valley opens below, the lungs work at full capacity at lower altitude, and the perspective on what was just accomplished settles on every hour of the walk down. Furthermore, the return through Langtang Village gives time to appreciate what the community rebuilt with fresh eyes and a mind that has just come from 5,732m. Consequently, rest early tonight. Day 9 is the longest trekking day of the expedition.

Day 09 — Langtang Village to Syabrubesi (1,460m)

Altitude: 1,460m | Trek: 7–8 hrs | Meals: B, L, D | Stay: Teahouse, Syabrubesi

The long descent from Langtang Village through Lama Hotel and the forest trail back to Syabrubesi marks the end of the trekking phase. Seven to eight hours of downhill on a long day — the knees carry the full weight of the expedition by the Syabrubesi arrival. Furthermore, tip your guide, climbing Sherpa, and porter at Syabrubesi tonight in cash — NPR 15,000–20,000 covers the full allocation for a solo trekker with one guide and one porter. Consequently, celebrate the 5,732m summit over dinner, confirm the morning departure time to Kathmandu, and sleep early.

Day 10 — Drive Syabrubesi to Kathmandu

Drive: 7–8 hrs | Meals: Breakfast

The shared jeep or bus returns to Kathmandu. The Yala Peak trek itinerary ends on arrival. 10 days. Langtang Valley. Kyanjin Gompa. Yala Peak at 5,732m with Shishapangma in Tibet on the northern horizon. Done.

Buffer Day Advice

Unlike Khumbu expeditions where Lukla flight delays are a genuine planning risk, the Yala Peak road approach has no flight-dependent departure. Build one buffer day in Kathmandu between the Day 10 return and any connecting international flight — road delays on the Trishuli Valley highway are uncommon in dry season but occasional, particularly in September when late monsoon weather still affects mountain roads. Furthermore, always keep one buffer day in Kathmandu before the Day 1 departure as well — for any arrival delays, gear rental, and the equipment check with your guide on Day 1. Consequently, a total of 12 days in Nepal (2 in Kathmandu + 10 expedition) is the standard booking structure Mountain Hike Nepal recommends.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days is the Yala Peak trek itinerary?

10 days from Kathmandu — Day 1 drive to Syabrubesi, Days 2–9 trekking and summit, Day 10 drive back to Kathmandu. Furthermore, the itinerary can be extended by 1–4 days to include Tsergo Ri, the Langtang glacier walk, extra acclimatisation, or Gosaikunda Lake. Consequently, always build at least 1 buffer night in Kathmandu between the Day 10 return and any international departure.

What is the hardest day in the Yala Peak trek itinerary?

Day 7 — the summit day — is the most demanding by altitude and combined effort. The ascent from High Camp to 5,732m and the full descent to Kyanjin Gompa runs 10–12 hours total. Furthermore, Day 9 from Langtang Village to Syabrubesi is the longest trekking day at 7–8 hours of predominantly downhill — demanding on the knees after 9 consecutive days on the trail. Consequently, both days require specific preparation — summit day for altitude endurance, Day 9 for knee durability on long sustained descents.

Is the Kyanjin Ri hike mandatory in the itinerary?

Yes — Mountain Hike Nepal treats the Day 5 Kyanjin Ri hike as non-negotiable. Reaching 4,773m as a day trip while sleeping at 3,850m is the only reliable physiological preparation for the High Camp overnight at 4,800m and the 5,732m summit the following day. Furthermore, trekkers who skip the acclimatisation hike consistently report more difficult AMS symptoms at High Camp. Consequently, the Kyanjin Ri hike is never compressed or skipped regardless of how strong the team feels after Day 4.
