The Langtang Valley Trek is Nepal’s closest major high-altitude trek to Kathmandu — and one of the most underrated Himalayan routes in the country. The trailhead at Syabrubesi is just three hours from the capital by road. No domestic flight. No airport queues. No Lukla weather delays. You leave Kathmandu in the morning and sleep in the mountains the same night.
The route follows the Langtang Khola river upstream through Langtang National Park — dense rhododendron and oak forest in the lower gorge, open alpine terrain above, and the wide glacial valley that leads to Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870m below the ice face of Langtang Lirung (7,246m). The optional summit hike to Tserko Ri at 4,984m on Day 5 — one of the finest mountain viewpoints accessible on any Nepal trek below 5,000m — is the highlight most trekkers talk about long after they return home.
The standard itinerary runs 8 days from Syabrubesi and back. The route can be extended to include the Gosaikunda Lake circuit — crossing the Laurebina Pass at 4,610m for a complete 10-day mountain loop. Customise your itinerary here.

The Langtang Valley gives you everything the famous Nepal trekking routes offer — high altitude, cultural depth, extraordinary mountain scenery, and genuine Himalayan teahouse life — at a fraction of the cost and complexity.
No Lukla flight. No restricted area permits. No 14-day minimum. The Langtang Valley Trek costs less, starts closer, finishes sooner, and carries fewer trekkers than any comparable route in Nepal. In October, when EBC and Annapurna teahouses are packed and the trails feel like queues, the upper Langtang Valley still feels like a real mountain experience.
The optional Tserko Ri summit at 4,984m — reached as a day hike from Kyanjin Gompa — puts near-5,000m altitude within reach of any well-prepared trekker without the cost or commitment of a high pass crossing. The Langtang Lirung north face visible from the summit is as close as most trekkers will ever stand to a Himalayan giant above 7,000m.
This trek is moderate — not casual. The Day 2 gorge ascent gains over 1,000m on a steep forest trail with no flat sections. The optional Tserko Ri summit day is genuinely demanding at near-5,000m. Preparation is the difference between struggling through and genuinely enjoying this circuit.
Mountain Hike Nepal guides the Langtang Valley Trek across dozens of departures each season. We know when the Tserko Ri trail has ice and when it does not. We know which teahouse families at Kyanjin Gompa cook the best dal bhat. We know what the altitude profile does to first-time Himalayan trekkers at Langtang Village and how to manage it before it becomes a problem.

Altitude: 1,460m | Drive: 7–8 hours | Accommodation: Teahouse, Syabrubesi | Meals: Lunch, Dinner
The Langtang Valley Trek begins with the drive north from Kathmandu — through Trishuli Bazaar and Dhunche into the Langtang National Park corridor. The first permit checkpoint sits at Dhunche at 1,982m. Your guide handles all documentation here while you stay in the vehicle.
Syabrubesi has everything tonight that disappears above it — reliable electricity, hot showers, Wi-Fi, and mobile signal. Charge every device. Make any final calls. The trail starts at the suspension bridge tomorrow morning and does not look back.
Altitude: 2,470m | Trek: 6–7 hours | Ascent: +1,010m | Accommodation: Teahouse | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
This is the steepest day on the entire Langtang Valley Trek — and it starts immediately. The trail crosses the Langtang Khola suspension bridge and climbs without mercy through dense rhododendron and oak forest. There are no flat sections. The gorge trail goes up and keeps going up.
What makes it bearable — and genuinely memorable — is the forest. Rhododendron trees grow to cathedral scale here. The canopy filters the light to deep green. Langur monkeys move through the upper branches. Pace from the first step. Lama Hotel is a cluster of teahouses at 2,470m named after the first lodge built here decades ago. It is the last reliable charging point before Kyanjin Gompa — use it tonight.
Altitude: 3,430m | Trek: 5–6 hours | Ascent: +960m | Accommodation: Teahouse | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
The forest begins to change above Lama Hotel. The trail climbs north through Ghoda Tabela at 3,000m — a former military post now used as a rest stop — where the valley opens and the high Langtang ridgeline appears ahead for the first time.
Langtang Village carries history every trekker should know before arriving. On 25 April 2015, the Nepal earthquake triggered a massive avalanche from Langtang Lirung that buried the original village. The rebuilt settlement stands on the same ground today. A memorial marks what was lost. Walking through Langtang Village is not a neutral experience. Drink 3–4 litres of water today — mild altitude effects are normal at 3,430m.
Altitude: 3,870m | Trek: 3–4 hours | Ascent: +440m | Accommodation: Teahouse | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
The shortest trekking day on the ascent — and one of the finest. The trail follows the valley floor upstream through open yak pasture. Langtang Lirung’s north face fills the northern horizon and grows larger with every hour.
Kyanjin Gompa arrives below the glacier at 3,870m — a monastery, a yak cheese factory, and a cluster of teahouses that serves as the base for the next two nights. Visit the monastery in the afternoon. Try the yak cheese from the factory next door — rich, distinctive, and genuinely famous among Himalayan trekkers. Take a short walk above the village this afternoon to begin acclimatisation.
Altitude: 4,984m high point — return overnight to 3,870m | Trek: 6–8 hours | Accommodation: Teahouse | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
The alarm goes off at 4:30am.
This is the day the Langtang Valley Trek delivers its finest moment. The trail climbs from Kyanjin Gompa toward Kyanjin Ri at 4,773m first — a 2–3 hour ascent on a clear path northeast of the monastery. The 360-degree panorama from Kyanjin Ri covers Langtang Lirung, Kimshung, Yansa Tsenji, and the Dorje Lakpa massif simultaneously.
For trekkers who feel strong, the trail continues to Tserko Ri at 4,984m — the highest point on the circuit. The final push from Kyanjin Ri gains a further 211m on steep, unmaintained scree. No technical sections. No fixed ropes. The difficulty is altitude and gradient — not skill. The summit view at 4,984m is the finest mountain panorama accessible from any trekking trail in Langtang National Park. Langtang Lirung’s ice face fills the northern skyline. The Tibetan plateau lies beyond the border ridge to the north on clear days.
Both summits are optional. Attempt them only if you feel strong after Day 4, have no AMS symptoms on the morning of Day 5, and slept well the night before. Trekking poles are non-negotiable on the descent from Tserko Ri — the scree below the summit ridge is steep and loose. Return to Kyanjin Gompa by early afternoon.
Altitude: 2,470m | Trek: 6–7 hours | Descent: -1,400m | Accommodation: Teahouse | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
The descent begins. Nearly 1,400m of altitude loss through the full length of the Langtang valley. The trail retraces the ascent route — the forest closes back in below Ghoda Tabela and breathing becomes noticeably easier with every hour below 3,500m.
Depart Kyanjin Gompa by 7am. Trekking poles carry the cumulative knee load better than any other equipment on this day. The teahouses at Lama Hotel feel very comfortable after four nights above 2,000m.
Altitude: 1,460m | Trek: 5–6 hours | Descent: -1,010m | Accommodation: Teahouse, Syabrubesi | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
The final trekking day descends through the rhododendron forest back to Syabrubesi. The trail is familiar from Day 2 — faster and less demanding on the descent, the valley opening ahead instead of closing above you.
Syabrubesi greets the returning trekker properly. Hot showers. Full menus. Wi-Fi. Mobile signal. Set aside the guide and porter tips in cash before dinner — present them before the jeep departs tomorrow morning. This is the moment that matters most to the people who carried your load.
Drive: 7–8 hours | Accommodation: Hotel, Kathmandu | Meals: Breakfast
The jeep departs Syabrubesi early — typically by 7am — for the return drive through Dhunche and Trishuli to Kathmandu. The mountains are visible behind you on clear mornings leaving the valley. Arrive in Kathmandu by evening.
The Langtang Valley Trek ends on arrival in Kathmandu.
The Langtang Valley Trek is an 8-day guided Himalayan trek inside Langtang National Park, starting 117 km north of Kathmandu by road. The route follows the Langtang Khola river upstream to Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870m with an optional summit of Tserko Ri at 4,984m and Kyanjin Ri at 4,773m on Day 5. No domestic flight is required.
The trek is rated moderate. The steepest day is Day 2 — Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel, over 1,000m of ascent on a continuous forest gorge trail. The optional Tserko Ri summit on Day 5 adds the most demanding altitude section at near-5,000m. Six to eight weeks of specific outdoor preparation are strongly recommended.
Yes — Nepal’s 2023 trekking regulations require all trekkers in the Langtang region to trek with a licensed guide or registered agency. Independent solo trekking is no longer legally permitted. Mountain Hike Nepal provides licensed English-speaking guides with specific Langtang Valley experience.
Two permits cover the standard route — the Langtang National Park Entry Permit (LTBR) and the TIMS card. Both are included in Mountain Hike Nepal’s package price. A third permit — the ACAP at approximately USD 23 — is required for trekkers adding the Gosaikunda Lake extension.
October and November are the finest months — post-monsoon clarity, stable weather, and reliable Tserko Ri summit conditions. April is the best spring month — rhododendron forests in full bloom through the gorge. Avoid June, July, and August — monsoon rain makes the gorge trail slippery and mountain views disappear.
Yes — and it makes the circuit significantly richer. The Langtang and Gosaikunda combination crosses the Laurebina Pass at 4,610m and reaches the sacred Gosaikunda Lake at 4,380m before descending to Dhunche, creating a 12-day circular route. Contact us to plan the combined itinerary.
Syabrubesi is 117 km from Kathmandu — approximately 7–8 hours by private jeep via Trishuli Bazaar and Dhunche. Mountain Hike Nepal includes round-trip jeep transport in the package price. No domestic flight is required — saving USD 350–450 per person compared to the Lukla flight cost on the EBC route.
The Langtang Valley Trek starts from USD 598 per person for groups of 8–10 and USD 809 for solo trekkers — guide, porter, all permits, all meals, accommodation, and round-trip jeep from Kathmandu included. Contact us for Gosaikunda extension pricing.
