Rara Lake Jeep Tour – 8 Days Itinerary

Day 01: Drive from Kathmandu to Kohalpur

Altitude: 180 m / 590 ft Drive Duration: 11–12 hours

A long first day, but a necessary one — this covers most of the flat highway distance between Kathmandu and the far-west. Overnight in Kohalpur, near Nepalgunj.

Day 02: Drive from Kohalpur to Manma (Kalikot)

Altitude: 1,720 m / 5,643 ft Drive Duration: 8–9 hours

Head north through Surkhet and into the Karnali hills. The road climbs steadily, and the landscape shifts from lowland plains to terraced hillsides and forest. Overnight in Manma.

Day 03: Drive from Manma to Rara Lake via Sinja Valley

Altitude: 2,990 m / 9,810 ft Drive Duration: 7–8 hours

The most rugged driving day of the trip. The route passes through Sinja Valley, once the capital of the Khasa Malla Kingdom, before climbing on to Gamghadi and into Rara National Park. Arrive at Rara Lake by evening.

Day 04: Rara Lake Exploration – Murma Top

Altitude: 2,990 m – 3,650 m / 9,810 ft – 11,975 ft Activity Duration: Full day

Hike up to Murma Top for a panoramic view over Rara Lake and the surrounding Karnali Himalayas. Return to the lakeshore in the afternoon for a boat ride or a walk along the water before evening.

Day 05: Drive from Rara Lake to Manma

Altitude: 1,720 m / 5,643 ft Drive Duration: 7–8 hours

Retrace the route back down through Sinja Valley and Gamghadi to Manma, with different light on the same landscape.

Day 06: Drive from Manma to Kohalpur

Altitude: 180 m / 590 ft Drive Duration: 8–9 hours

Descend back through Surkhet to Kohalpur, closing out the rugged section of the drive.

Day 07: Drive from Kohalpur to Sauraha (Chitwan)

Altitude: 150 m / 492 ft Drive Duration: 6–7 hours

Head east from Kohalpur toward Chitwan, trading the Karnali hills for the lowland Terai. Overnight in Sauraha, the gateway town to Chitwan National Park. If you’d like, an early jungle safari can be arranged the next morning before continuing to Kathmandu — this isn’t part of the package, but we’re happy to help set it up.

Day 08: Drive from Sauraha to Kathmandu

Altitude: 1,400 m / 4,593 ft (Kathmandu) Drive Duration: 5–6 hours

An optional early-morning jungle safari in Chitwan can be arranged before departure. Afterward, drive back to Kathmandu, marking the end of the Rara Lake overland journey.

Sinja Valley: Where Nepali Was Born

Most travelers heading to Rara Lake drive straight through Sinja Valley without knowing what they’re passing.

The Khasa Malla Kingdom

From the 11th to the 14th century, Sinja was the capital of the Khasa Malla Kingdom, a powerful hill state founded by Nagaraja that once controlled much of what is now far-western Nepal. Its rulers left behind stone inscriptions in early Devanagari script, some of the oldest surviving examples of written Nepali anywhere in the country — which is why linguists consider this valley the birthplace of the language itself.

What’s Left Today

After the 14th century, the Khasa kingdom broke apart into dozens of smaller principalities, later reunified under the Kingdom of Nepal in the 18th century. What’s left in Sinja today is a scatter of ruined palaces, stone water spouts, temples, and inscribed pillars, all sitting quietly in a farming valley that most tourism in Nepal has simply never reached. It’s currently on Nepal’s UNESCO World Heritage tentative list.

1. What actually is the Rara Lake Jeep Tour?

It’s an 8-day private road trip from Kathmandu to Rara Lake, the largest lake in Nepal, tucked away in the far-western Karnali hills. Instead of trekking in over multiple days, you get there by private jeep — same destination, very different journey.

2. How long does the whole trip take, start to finish?

Eight days door to door. That covers the drive out through Kohalpur, Manma, and Sinja Valley, a day at the lake itself, and the return leg through Chitwan back to Kathmandu.

3. Why does the drive take so long?

Honestly, because Rara Lake is about as far from Kathmandu as you can get in Nepal without leaving the country. The far-west isn’t on the same highway network as the rest of Nepal, so the first and last days are long stretches of driving, and the middle section runs through genuinely rugged mountain roads. It’s a real road trip, not a quick hop.

4. Do I need to bring a guide, or is one included?

Not included by default — the drivers know the route well, and most of it is straightforward. That said, if you’d like someone to walk you through Sinja Valley’s history or explain what you’re seeing in the villages along the way, we can add a guide on request.

5. What permits do I actually need for this?

Just one: the Rara National Park Entry Permit. We handle that for you, and the fee is already built into the tour price, so there’s nothing extra to sort out when you arrive.

6. Is this trip physically tough?

Not really, no. You’re sitting in a jeep for most of it, so the effort level is low — the roads themselves are the challenge, not your legs. The one real hike is up to Murma Top on Day 4, and even that’s a moderate uphill walk, nothing technical.

7. When’s the best time to go?

Aim for September through May. Autumn gives you the clearest skies right after the monsoon, winter is cold but stable, and spring is pleasant before the rains build up again. June to August is genuinely worth avoiding — the Karnali hill roads see a real jump in landslide risk during monsoon.

8. What’s the story with Sinja Valley — why does it matter?

It’s one of those places most people drive straight through without knowing what they’re looking at. Sinja was the capital of the Khasa Malla Kingdom from the 11th to 14th century, and the stone inscriptions found there are some of the oldest written examples of the Nepali language anywhere. It’s currently on Nepal’s UNESCO World Heritage tentative list — a genuinely underrated stop most Rara itineraries barely mention.

9. What is there actually to do once you’re at the lake?

The main event is the hike up to Murma Top, which gives you a proper panoramic view over the lake and the Karnali Himalayas behind it. After that, it’s a slower pace — walking the lakeshore, taking a boat out on the water, just being somewhere very few travelers ever get to.

10. Is accommodation part of the package?

No, you book that yourself. We left it out on purpose, so you’re not stuck paying for a fixed standard when Manma, Kohalpur, Sauraha, and the lake all have different options at different price points.

11. Couldn’t I just fly to Rara Lake instead?

You could — some tours fly into Talcha airport nearby and skip the driving almost entirely. This jeep tour is the full overland version. It takes longer, but you get Sinja Valley and the Karnali hills as part of the trip, which the flight route completely skips.

12. I’ve already done Everest or Annapurna — would this suit me?

That’s honestly who this trip is built for. Rara Lake sits well outside Nepal’s main trekking circuits, so if you’re looking for something on your second or third trip to Nepal that feels genuinely different, this is it.

13. Can I fit in a jungle safari while I’m at it?

Yes, and it works out well with the route. The return leg overnights in Sauraha, right at the gateway to Chitwan National Park, so an early-morning safari on Day 8 before heading back to Kathmandu is easy to arrange. It’s not included in the base price, but just let us know and we’ll set it up.
