Trip Overview

The Champadevi Day Hike is a guided one-day hike to the top of Champadevi (about 2,285m), on the south-western rim of the Kathmandu Valley. It is priced from $89 to $179 per person. After a drive past Pharping to Hattiban, you climb through pine forest to the Champadevi temple and walk back down the same trail.

The trail follows a ridge with stone steps on the steeper parts, so it is steady rather than hard. On clear days, the summit looks over the whole valley and north to Langtang and Ganesh Himal.

Because the walk takes only three hours or so, it suits a free day in Kathmandu, or a warm-up before a longer trek. No permit or entry fee is needed.

We’re a Kathmandu-based company, registered since 2018, and we handle the private vehicle, guide and lunch for you. Check the group prices or message us on WhatsApp.

Route for Champadevi Day Hike

Kathmandu → Pharping → Hattiban → Champadevi summit → Hattiban → Kathmandu

Why Choose This Champadevi Day Hike?

This is the easiest way to get a proper hill walk and a valley-wide view in a single day. The drive is short, the trail is clear, and you’re back at your hotel by mid-afternoon.

From Hattiban, the trail climbs a forested ridge to the temple at about 2,285m. Most people reach the top in 1.5 to 2 hours. On clear days, you look across the valley to the Himalaya, with Langtang and Ganesh Himal to the north.

Compared with Nagarkot or Chandragiri, Champadevi has no road or cable car to the top. You walk the whole way, which keeps it quieter than most viewpoints around Kathmandu.

Champadevi Day Hike Highlights

  • Champadevi summit (about 2,285m) — a small hilltop temple with views over the whole Kathmandu Valley
  • Pine forest ridge — a shaded trail with stone steps on the steeper sections
  • Mountain views — Langtang and Ganesh Himal to the north on clear days
  • Pharping — the drive passes this old Newar town, known for its Buddhist monasteries
  • No permit needed — just turn up and walk, with no entry fee

Who is this Champadevi Day Hike For?

  • Travellers with one free day in Kathmandu
  • Trekkers who want a warm-up walk before a longer trek
  • Families and beginners who walk regularly
  • Anyone looking for valley views without a long drive

The hike is easy to moderate. The climb is steady, with sections of stone steps, and takes 1.5 to 2 hours. There are no shops on the upper trail, so carry water and snacks. After rain, the path can be muddy and leeches appear from June to September. Mountain views depend on the weather and are often hazy in spring.

Transport, Permits and Seasons

Transport

A private vehicle picks you up from your Kathmandu hotel in the morning. The drive past Pharping to the Hattiban trailhead takes about an hour or more, depending on traffic. After the hike, the same vehicle brings you back to your hotel in the afternoon.

Route

We use the regular trail from Hattiban, which most hikers take. It climbs through pine forest along a clear ridge to the summit, then returns the same way. Other routes from Pharping or towards Kirtipur are possible on request.

Permits and fees

Champadevi is not inside a national park, so no permit or entry fee is needed.

Best season

October to April is the best time, and October to December usually gives the clearest views. Winter mornings are cold at the top. In spring, haze often hides the mountains, and from June to September the trail is muddy, with leeches.
