Chitwan National Park Safari: A Practical Planning Guide

A Chitwan National Park safari usually means two or three nights in Sauraha. Most trips include a jeep safari inside the park, a canoe ride on the Rapti River and a guided walk. One-horned rhinos are seen on most trips. Tigers live here, but sightings are rare. Park entry costs NPR 2,000 per person per day for foreigners. The park jeep safari closes for the monsoon, usually from 1 July until around Dashain in October.

This guide covers what you can realistically see, which activities are worth doing, when to go and what it costs. It is written for travellers adding Chitwan to a trek or a wider Nepal trip.

What’s Inside This Guide

Chitwan National Park at a Glance

Chitwan is Nepal’s oldest national park, in the lowland Terai of central southern Nepal. It is flat, hot and forested, nothing like the mountain regions most visitors come for.

What Wildlife Can You See in Chitwan?

Expectations matter here. Chitwan is not an African savannah park, and the tall grass and forest hide animals well. A good safari usually means rhinos, deer, crocodiles and many birds.

Likely on most trips

  • One-horned rhino — the park’s signature animal, often seen in grassland and at the river’s edge
  • Spotted deer and sambar — common along jeep tracks
  • Mugger crocodile — seen basking on banks during the canoe ride
  • Grey langur and rhesus macaque — in the forest canopy
  • Birds — kingfishers, storks, hornbills and raptors, especially on morning walks

Possible, but not common

  • Gharial — the thin-snouted fish-eating crocodile, best seen from the river
  • Wild elephant, sloth bear and leopard — present, but sightings are occasional
  • Bengal tiger — 145 were counted in Chitwan and its buffer zone in 2026, but they are shy and mostly nocturnal

Treat a tiger as luck, not a target. Travellers who come only for tigers are often disappointed. Those who come for the whole ecosystem rarely are.

Chitwan Safari Activities

Jeep safari

The jeep safari is the main way to see the park’s interior. Drives run from several entry points, including Sauraha, Kasara and Meghauli. According to the park office, 74 safari jeeps operate across five launch points. A half-day drive covers grassland, forest and waterholes, and gives the best chance of rhinos.

Canoe ride on the Rapti

A dugout canoe drifts downstream for one to two hours, usually from near Sauraha. It is quiet, low to the water and good for crocodiles and birds. Keep your hands inside the canoe, because muggers are common.

Guided jungle walk

Walks are led by licensed naturalist guides and start early, when birds are most active. You see far more detail on foot, from tracks to insects. You are also on the ground with rhinos and other large animals, so follow your guide exactly.

Elephant rides: what has changed

Elephant rides have not been allowed inside the national park for nearly 15 years. Privately owned elephants still give rides in buffer-zone community forests around Sauraha. In December 2025, Nepal’s Supreme Court ordered that rides be reconsidered on welfare grounds and suggested elephant walks as an alternative. It was not an immediate ban. If you want to see the park itself, choose the jeep safari.

Tharu culture and breeding centres

The Tharu are the indigenous people of the Terai. A village visit and an evening Tharu dance show in Sauraha are part of most packages. The Elephant Breeding Centre at Khorsor, near Sauraha, and the Gharial Breeding Centre near the park headquarters at Kasara are easy additions. Nepali media reported in August 2026 that entry to both breeding centres is now free.

Best Time for a Chitwan Safari

October to March is the most comfortable time, with mild days and little rain. February to May is often better for wildlife, because the tall grass has been cut and animals gather near water. The trade-off is heat from April onwards.

MonthAvg. high (°C)Avg. rain (mm)What to expect
Jan2121Cool, often foggy mornings
Feb2423Pleasant; grass being cut
Mar2935Warming up; good visibility

Dec2218Cool and dry

Climate figures are long-term averages for Bharatpur from Weather2Travel. Actual conditions vary from year to year.

The park jeep safari usually closes from 1 July for the monsoon and reopens around Dashain. In 2026, it reopened on 9 October, later than usual, after flood damage to park roads. During the closure, jeep safaris still run in the buffer-zone community forests.

How to Get to Chitwan National Park

  • Tourist bus from Kathmandu — about six hours to Sauraha, leaving early in the morning
  • Tourist bus from Pokhara — about five to six hours, a good option after an Annapurna-region trek
  • Flight — Kathmandu to Bharatpur takes about 25 minutes, then around 30 minutes by road to the park
  • Private vehicle — the most flexible option, and useful with luggage or a family

Sauraha is where most visitors stay. It has the widest choice of resorts and the shortest walk to the river. Quieter bases on the western side, such as Meghauli and Amaltari, suit travellers who prefer fewer people.

Chitwan Safari Cost

The fixed government cost is the park entry fee. For foreigners, it is NPR 2,000 per person per day, including VAT. For SAARC nationals, it is NPR 1,000. These rates were set in 2018 and were still being quoted in early 2026.

Everything else depends on your resort, transport and activities. Most travellers book a package, which bundles the bus, resort, meals, park entry, activities and a guide. Our Chitwan Jungle Safari 3 Days costs $189 to $229 per person, depending on group size.

How Many Days in Chitwan?

Two nights is the usual minimum. Travel takes most of the first day. A two-night stay gives you one full day for the jeep safari and canoe ride. A third night adds a second safari or a longer walk, and makes the trip feel less rushed. One night is possible, but you spend more time on the bus than in the park.

Park Rules and Safety

  • A licensed guide is required for jungle walks and jeep safaris inside the park
  • Walking in the park on your own is not allowed
  • Wear muted colours, carry water and keep your voice low on safaris
  • Use strong insect repellent, especially from April to October
  • On foot, keep your distance from rhinos and follow your guide’s instructions immediately

Rhinos and wild elephants can charge, and serious incidents do happen. Walking with an experienced guide and keeping to their instructions is what keeps it safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Chitwan worth visiting after a trek?

Yes, for most people. It offers something the mountains don’t: lowland wildlife, warm weather and Tharu culture. It also needs no fitness, so it works as a rest after EBC or an Annapurna trek. If you only care about mountains, you can skip it.

Can I visit Chitwan without a tour?

Yes. You can take the tourist bus to Sauraha, book a hotel and arrange activities locally. Inside the park, you still need a licensed guide for jeep safaris and walks. A package mainly saves time and bundles the park entry, guide and activities.

Sauraha or Meghauli: where should I stay?

Sauraha is the easiest choice. It has the most hotels and restaurants, and it’s close to the river and park gate. Meghauli and Amaltari, on the western side, are quieter and more remote, but have fewer options and longer transfers.

Is a jungle walk in Chitwan safe?

It is safe when you go with a licensed, experienced guide and follow their instructions. You are on foot in rhino and elephant habitat, so the guide decides how close to go. Walking alone in the park is not allowed.

Can I see Chitwan in one day from Kathmandu?

Not really. The bus takes about six hours each way, which leaves almost no time in the park. Even with a flight, a same-day trip is rushed. Two nights is the sensible minimum.
