The short answer
Go in October for the clearest views from High Camp and the most reliable Day 5 conditions. Go in April for the rhododendron bloom on the Deurali approach and the finest Poon Hill sunrise. Furthermore, November delivers October’s clarity with a fraction of the trekkers — adequate cold-weather gear essential. Consequently, any of these three months delivers an excellent trek.
Autumn Mardi Himal Trek Season (September to November)
Autumn is the finest overall Mardi Himal Trek season. The monsoon clears in late September and leaves the Annapurna region in its sharpest, most stable weather window of the year. Furthermore, the forest above Deurali is intensely green — the Pothana approach and Low Camp ridge are particularly vivid. Consequently, October and early November combine clear views with lush trail — the most rewarding months on this route.
September — Clearing Monsoon
September marks the tail end of the monsoon. Rain becomes intermittent by mid-September and the trail clears progressively. Furthermore, September brings dramatic cloud formations — cumulonimbus over the valley while the morning ridge stays clear. Consequently, late September is good with fewer trekkers — a real option for flexible dates.
October — The Best Single Month
October is the finest month. Post-monsoon air is at its clearest, the trail from Kande to Siding is dry and well-maintained, and the High Camp views of Machapuchare are at their most reliable. Furthermore, moderate ridge temperatures make the Day 5 Base Camp approach genuinely enjoyable. Consequently, October fills teahouses fastest — confirm High Camp availability before departure.
November — Clarity With Fewer Trekkers
November delivers October’s clarity with noticeably fewer people. Furthermore, the trail above Deurali quietens after mid-October. Furthermore, High Camp drops to -3°C to -8°C overnight in November — cold morning ridge walks. Consequently, November suits trekkers who want post-monsoon views without the competition — bring adequate cold-weather layers.
Spring Mardi Himal Trek Season (March to May)
Spring is the second finest Mardi Himal Trek season and the best for the Poon Hill extension. The rhododendron forests on the Pothana and Deurali approach bloom in full red and white through March and April. Furthermore, the Ghorepani ridge bloom peaks in late March and early April — one of Nepal’s most beautiful trail environments. Consequently, spring is the season most returning clients recommend for the combined circuit.
March — Early Spring
March marks the start of the season after winter. The lower forest trails are accessible and the rhododendron bloom begins at lower altitudes. Furthermore, High Camp carries frost in early March — microspikes may be needed on the Day 5 approach. Consequently, March suits experienced trekkers comfortable with cold ridge conditions.
April — Best Spring Month
April is the finest spring month. The rhododendron bloom peaks across the full Pothana and Deurali approach section. The ridge above Low Camp is reliably clear of ice. Furthermore, the pre-monsoon atmosphere is sharp and views from High Camp are excellent before May haze. Consequently, April is the month we most often recommend to clients who are flexible on dates.
May — Late Spring
May is warm in the lower forest and pre-monsoon cloud builds from midday. Furthermore, the Day 5 Base Camp approach should finish before 11am in May — 5am departures deliver clear views. Consequently, May suits trekkers who commit to early summit starts and accept some afternoon cloud on the lower trail sections.
Winter Season (December to February)
Winter on the Mardi Himal Trek is cold, clear, quiet, and remarkable for trekkers prepared for it. Views from High Camp in December and January are the sharpest of the year — extraordinary clarity above the treeline. Furthermore, the Pothana and Deurali approach are accessible and pleasant even in January. Consequently, winter suits trekkers with proper cold-weather gear who want the ridge without crowds.
High Camp at 3,550m reaches -10°C to -15°C overnight in January. The Day 5 ridge approach carries ice and the Base Camp section needs microspikes. Furthermore, some High Camp teahouses close in deep winter — confirm availability before booking. Consequently, winter requires a specific conversation about preparation before we run this itinerary.
Monsoon Season — June to August (Avoid)
The monsoon brings consistent daily rainfall to the Mardi Himal forest from June through August. The trail from Kande through Pothana becomes slippery and leeches appear below 2,500m. Furthermore, views from High Camp and Base Camp disappear behind cloud for consecutive days. Consequently, the ridge experience is not available in June, July, or August — we do not run departures then.
Best Mardi Himal Trek Season for the Poon Hill Circuit
The finest Mardi Himal Trek season for the 9-day Poon Hill and Ghorepani extension is April — specifically the two weeks from late March through mid-April when the rhododendron forests are in full bloom on both the Ghorepani ridge and the Pothana–Deurali approach section.
The Poon Hill sunrise is excellent in both seasons — but the spring version is different. The forest is alive with colour as you climb in the dark, and dawn reveals rhododendron in full bloom as the sun rises. Furthermore, April temperatures at Poon Hill are more comfortable for the pre-dawn climb than October or November. Consequently, trekkers wanting the most spectacular combined circuit should target late March or April.
| Month | Poon Hill Sunrise | Rhododendron Bloom | Verdict for Poon Hill Circuit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Late March | Good — clear mornings | Starting at lower altitudes | ✅ Good — early bloom |
| April | Excellent | Full bloom across Ghorepani and Deurali approach | ✅✅✅ Best month |
| October | Excellent — post-monsoon clarity | None — autumn colours only | ✅✅ Best for views |
| November | Very good — cold but clear | None | ✅ Good — fewest crowds |

Frequently Asked Questions
October is the single best month for mountain views and trail conditions — post-monsoon clarity at its peak and the most reliable conditions on the Day 5 Base Camp approach. Furthermore, April is the best spring month for the rhododendron forest experience and the Poon Hill circuit — the bloom peaks across both the Ghorepani ridge and the Pothana–Deurali approach in late March and early April. Consequently, the right month depends on what you prioritise — autumn clarity or spring colour.
Yes — with proper preparation. Winter delivers extraordinary clarity and genuine solitude, but High Camp at 3,550m reaches -10°C to -15°C overnight in January and the Day 5 ridge approach carries ice requiring microspikes. Furthermore, some High Camp teahouses close in deep winter. Consequently, winter is suitable for experienced cold-weather trekkers with quality sleeping bags and layers — not recommended without a specific conversation with Mountain Hike Nepal about your experience level first.
No — we do not recommend this trek in June, July, or August. The trail from Kande through Pothana and Deurali becomes slippery with wet roots and leeches appear below 2,500m. Furthermore, mountain views from High Camp and Base Camp disappear behind cloud for consecutive days. Consequently, the ridge experience that defines this trek is simply not available during monsoon season.
