The best time for the Annapurna Circuit trek is October for autumn and April for spring — both deliver stable weather, reliable Thorong La crossing conditions, and the mountain views that make the circuit one of the world’s great long-distance walks. Furthermore, the Thorong La Pass at 5,416m introduces a weather variable that shorter Nepal treks do not face — the pass can close with heavy snowfall at any time from November onward and carries genuine risk in afternoon storms during the monsoon shoulder months. Consequently, the season decision for the circuit matters more than for ABC or Langtang — not just for comfort, but for the safety of the pass crossing itself.

Unlike EBC and ABC where season affects comfort and views, on the Annapurna Circuit season affects pass safety. A wrong month choice means Thorong La is genuinely dangerous — not just uncomfortable. Furthermore, the weather on the Mustang side of the pass is drier and more extreme than the Marsyangdi side — conditions can change rapidly between Thorong Phedi and the summit. Consequently, season planning for the circuit starts with Thorong La weather windows, not trail conditions.

Best Time for Annapurna Circuit Trek — Autumn Season

October — the finest month on the circuit

October delivers the most reliable Thorong La crossing conditions of the year. The monsoon clears completely by late September and October brings post-monsoon clarity — deep blue skies, sharp mountain views from Annapurna II above Upper Pisang to Dhaulagiri across the Kali Gandaki, and the most stable weather window of the circuit calendar. The pass crossing in October typically happens in cold but windless early morning conditions — the ideal combination for a safe 4am start. Furthermore, the trail is at its most vibrant in October — teahouses fully staffed, fresh produce still available in Manang, and the high trail from Pisang to Ngawal alive with trekkers from every continent. Consequently, October is the right choice for first-time trekkers who want the most reliable best time Annapurna Circuit trek experience with the best possible Thorong La conditions.

November — quieter, colder, still excellent

November brings fewer trekkers, equally clear views, and significantly colder temperatures above 4,000m. The trail from Manang to Thorong Phedi is noticeably less crowded after the first week of November — teahouse availability improves and the upper circuit feels genuinely quiet. The pass is still crossable in November but requires greater cold-weather preparation — temperatures at Thorong Phedi drop to -15°C to -20°C and the pass crossing at 4am feels more severe than October. Furthermore, heavy snowfall can close the pass unpredictably from late November onward — always check current conditions at the HRA clinic in Manang before proceeding. Consequently, November suits experienced trekkers who prefer solitude and can tolerate serious cold, but first-timers are better served by October.

Spring Season — February to May

April — the best spring month for the circuit

April is the finest spring month — and many experienced trekkers rate it equal to October as the best time for the Annapurna Circuit trek. Weather is stable, the Thorong La crossing conditions are reliable before the pre-monsoon cloud builds, and the rhododendron forests on the Ghorepani and Poon Hill section are in full bloom — the most spectacular floral display of any Nepal trekking route. Furthermore, the circuit in April delivers something the autumn season cannot: the lower trail from Besisahar to Manang lined with blooming rhododendrons in brilliant red and pink, the forest above Ghandruk transformed by spring colour. Consequently, April is the preferred spring choice for trekkers who specifically want the rhododendron experience alongside the Thorong La crossing — a combination unique to this season.

March — early season, cooler and quieter

March opens the spring trekking season. The trail is quiet, the air still cold above 4,000m, and the Thorong La crossing requires careful morning timing as late-season snow from winter can linger on the upper approach. The rhododendrons begin their lower-altitude bloom in late February, reaching the Ghorepani ridgeline by mid-March. Furthermore, March suits experienced trekkers who want empty trails and lower costs — teahouses are opening from winter and the circuit has not yet reached peak occupation. Consequently, March is a genuine alternative to October for trekkers who prioritise solitude over perfect weather certainty.

May — viable with caveats

Early May is still acceptable — the first two weeks offer reasonable Thorong La conditions before the pre-monsoon cloud builds. From mid-May onward, afternoon thunderstorms become regular on the pass and the heat and humidity on the lower circuit trail increase significantly. Furthermore, late May sees pre-monsoon haze limiting the long mountain views that define the circuit experience. Consequently, if May is your only option, target the first two weeks and accept that the pass crossing carries more afternoon weather risk than October or April.

Winter — December to February

Winter on the circuit is challenging — specifically not the best time Annapurna Circuit trek for beginners or first-time high-altitude trekkers. Thorong La can close entirely with heavy snowfall from December through February — some years the pass remains closed for weeks. Temperatures at Thorong Phedi drop to -20°C to -25°C at night. Furthermore, some teahouses above Manang close in deep winter — confirm availability before departure. Consequently, winter circuit trekking suits only experienced cold-weather trekkers with specific high-altitude winter experience, the right gear, and full flexibility to wait out a pass closure.

Specifically, if Thorong La closes during your planned crossing day in winter, options are: wait at Thorong Phedi for conditions to improve, return to Manang and either wait or exit the circuit early, or fly from Jomsom to Pokhara by changing itinerary to cross earlier. Contact Mountain Hike Nepal before any winter circuit booking to confirm current seasonal conditions and pass status.

Months to Avoid — Monsoon Season

June, July, and August are the months to avoid on the Annapurna Circuit without exception. The monsoon brings daily rain on the lower trail, persistent cloud blocking all mountain views above 3,000m, and genuine danger on Thorong La where afternoon thunderstorms and snow make the pass crossing hazardous. Furthermore, landslide risk on the approach road from Besisahar to Chame increases significantly during heavy monsoon rainfall — road closures can add days to the itinerary unpredictably. Consequently, no responsible trekking operator offers standard circuit departures during peak monsoon, and Mountain Hike Nepal does not run circuit groups in July and August.

September is the exception — from the 20th onward, the monsoon begins clearing and conditions improve rapidly. Late September circuit departures are viable and deliver the satisfaction of arriving in Manang as the post-monsoon clarity takes hold. Furthermore, late September sees very few other trekkers — the trail has a different, quieter atmosphere than peak October. Consequently, late September is an underrated window for experienced trekkers who want post-monsoon freshness without October’s crowds.

The HRA Manang condition check — mandatory before Thorong La

The Himalayan Rescue Association clinic in Manang posts current Thorong La pass conditions every day during trekking season. Checking conditions at the HRA before leaving Manang for Yak Kharka is mandatory on every Mountain Hike Nepal circuit departure — regardless of season. Furthermore, the HRA rangers have direct contact with teahouse owners at Thorong Phedi and High Camp who report pass conditions daily. Consequently, any pass closure or serious snowfall warning comes through the HRA system before any trekking team reaches the upper approach — giving Mountain Hike Nepal guides the information needed to make the right departure decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month for the Annapurna Circuit Trek?

October is the single best month — the most searched and most recommended best time Annapurna Circuit trek window — post-monsoon clarity, the most reliable Thorong La crossing conditions of the year, and the most complete mountain views on the circuit. Furthermore, April is the best spring equivalent — rhododendron forests in full bloom on the Ghorepani and Poon Hill section and reliable pass conditions before the pre-monsoon cloud builds. Consequently, the best time for the Annapurna Circuit trek is October for the finest overall experience or April for the finest lower-trail scenery — both are genuinely excellent choices.

Can you do the Annapurna Circuit in winter?

Technically yes, but not recommended for most trekkers. Thorong La can close with heavy snowfall from December through February, temperatures at Thorong Phedi drop to -20°C to -25°C, and some teahouses above Manang close entirely. Furthermore, a pass closure during your planned crossing requires either waiting at Thorong Phedi or abandoning the crossing and exiting via Manang. Consequently, winter circuit trekking is for experienced high-altitude cold-weather trekkers only — contact Mountain Hike Nepal before any winter booking to confirm current conditions and contingency planning.

Is the monsoon season safe for the Annapurna Circuit?

No — June, July, and August are not safe for the Thorong La crossing. Monsoon storms make the pass genuinely dangerous and Mountain Hike Nepal does not run circuit groups during peak monsoon. Furthermore, the approach road from Besisahar to Chame has high landslide risk during heavy monsoon rainfall. Consequently, September from the 20th onward is the earliest viable window after the monsoon — late September delivers good conditions with very few crowds and post-monsoon freshness.
