Permit Costs

Two permits cover this trek — the same two EBC and the Everest View Trek use, since all three routes pass through the same Khumbu entry points. We handle both, and your guide presents them at the Jorsale checkpoint, so you never have to think about it.

The Lukla Flight and Ramechhap Transfer

Your Lukla flight is already inside the package price, so this section is really about when the routing changes. During peak season — spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) — flights shift to Manthali Airport in Ramechhap, adding a 4–5 hour overland transfer from your Kathmandu hotel that we arrange and include at no extra cost. Outside peak season, flights typically run direct between Kathmandu and Lukla.

This isn’t a Mountain Hike Nepal policy — Nepal’s Civil Aviation Authority sets it, rerouting flights through Ramechhap during the busiest trekking months to ease pressure on Tribhuvan International Airport. Still, every airline running this route follows the same arrangement, so the price you pay stays the same either way.

Gokyo Ri tops out at 5,357m, well above the altitude where a lightweight gear list stops being enough. So this is closer to EBC’s packing needs than the Everest View Trek’s — expect real cold-weather gear, not just a warm layer.

Tips and Visa

Tips. Figure on somewhere around $45–65 total for your guide and $20–35 for your porter across an 11-day trip — hand it over in cash on your last evening in Namche. It’s not mandatory, but it’s standard practice, and it matters to the people who carried your load and walked the whole valley beside you.

The visa. $50, paid in cash on arrival — USD is the safest bet (bring clean, undamaged bills; NPR is technically accepted too). Some counters at Tribhuvan International Airport take cards, but that’s not guaranteed and can carry a 3–4% surcharge, so don’t plan around it.

Insurance and Kathmandu Nights

Insurance. This is the one number we won’t guess at. Your policy needs to explicitly cover trekking at Gokyo Ri’s altitude, 5,357m, and helicopter evacuation from the Khumbu — a policy capped at 5,000m won’t actually cover you at the summit. So confirm the altitude limit with your insurer in writing before you buy; we can point you toward providers that cover this route if you need a recommendation.

Kathmandu nights. Budget for at least one night before the trek and one after, more if you want buffer days around your Lukla flight — this route runs through Ramechhap in peak season, and a missed connection costs you a day either way.

Trek with a group. Going from solo to 8–12 people drops your price by $310 per person and adds an assistant guide at no extra cost — the single biggest lever on this trek’s price.

Rent instead of buy. Renting the heavy cold-weather items in Thamel saves real money over buying new, and the gear is entirely adequate for an 11-day trip.
