Upper Mustang Itinerary Jeep Drive tour
Day 1 – 12 May
Dhulikhel → Kathmandu → Baglung (Drive | ~270–300 km | 9–10 hrs)
Start early from Dhulikhel Bazaar and connect through Kathmandu to join the Pokhara highway. The drive follows a mix of highway and mid-hills roads with river valleys, terraced farms, and scattered villages. You’ll pass Mugling and continue toward Pokhara before diverting to Baglung. Short breaks are planned for tea, lunch, and viewpoints, with your guide giving a brief orientation on the route and the days ahead. Arrival in Baglung by evening and overnight.
Day 2 – 13 May
Baglung → Beni → Tatopani → Kagbeni → Chhusang (Drive | ~170–190 km | 7–9 hrs)
From Baglung, the road drops to Beni and enters the Kali Gandaki Valley, following the world’s deepest gorge between Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges. The terrain gradually shifts from green hills to dry, windswept Mustang landscapes. A stop at Tatopani offers a break point, then continue north to Kagbeni for permit verification (gateway to Upper Mustang). After the checkpoint, proceed to Chhusang, known for its red cliffs and cave formations. Your guide explains local culture, trade routes, and the shift into the restricted region. Overnight in Chhusang.
Day 3 – 14 May
Chhusang → Lo Manthang + Tiji Festival Day 1 (Drive | ~60–70 km | 4–6 hrs)
Today’s drive enters Upper Mustang proper, with a dramatic change into high-altitude desert terrain. The route climbs through Chele, Syangboche, and Ghami, crossing passes like Nyi La and Lo La with wide views over Mustang’s eroded hills and ancient trade paths. Stops are made at mani walls, chortens, and traditional villages where your guide shares cultural context. Arrive at Lo Manthang, the historic walled capital. In the afternoon, attend Tiji Festival – Day 1 (Tsa Chham), where monks perform masked dances to purify and prepare the sacred space. Overnight in Lo Manthang.
Day 4 – 15 May
Lo Manthang – Tiji Festival Day 2 (Sightseeing + Festival)
A full day dedicated to the Tiji Festival. The central courtyard becomes the stage for Nga Chham (The Battle), representing the struggle between the deity Dorjee Sonnu and the demon. Your guide provides real-time interpretation of rituals, symbols, and movements, helping guests understand the deeper meaning. Between performances, explore Lo Manthang’s monasteries, narrow alleys, and the royal palace area. This day is paced slowly to fully absorb the cultural experience. Overnight in Lo Manthang.
Day 5 – 16 May
Lo Manthang → Muktinath → Jomsom (Drive | ~90–110 km | 6–8 hrs)
Option to attend the final morning ritual, Rha Chham (Victory & Blessing), symbolizing the defeat of evil and restoration of balance. Afterward, descend by jeep toward Muktinath via high passes and open valley landscapes. Stop for a guided visit at Muktinath Temple, a sacred site for both Hindus and Buddhists, known for its 108 water spouts and eternal flame. Continue the drive to Jomsom, passing Kagbeni again and following the Kali Gandaki riverbed. Overnight in Jomsom.
Day 6 – 17 May
Jomsom → Pokhara (Drive | ~155–165 km | 7–9 hrs)
Drive south from Jomsom through Marpha (apple village), Tatopani, and Beni. The road transitions from dry Mustang terrain back into greener hills and river valleys. Multiple short stops are made for rest, photos, and meals, with your guide assisting throughout. Arrival in Pokhara by late afternoon, where the trip concludes near Lakeside.
