The Island Peak climbing itinerary is 17 days from Lukla — a continuous expedition that covers the Everest Base Camp approach, Kala Patthar sunrise, the Chhukung Valley, Island Peak Base Camp, and the 6,189m headwall summit before descending back to Lukla. Furthermore, the EBC approach phase is not just scenic preamble. Consequently, this guide covers every day in full.

Why this itinerary works

The Island Peak climbing itinerary is structured around the acclimatisation logic that makes the 6,189m headwall achievable. Two nights at Namche (3,438m), two nights at Dingboche (4,410m), the 5,000m Nagarjun hike on Day 6. Furthermore, descending to Lobuche at 4,910m after Kala Patthar gives a lower overnight before the Chhukung approach. Consequently, by Day 12 the team has spent 11 days above 3,400m and the 6,189m headwall is within physiological reach.

Island Peak Climbing Itinerary — EBC Approach Phase (Days 1–9)

Day 01 — The Khumbu Begins — Fly to Lukla, Trek to Phakding (2,800m)

Altitude: 2,800m | Flight: 35 min | Trek: 3–4 hrs | Meals: Lunch, Dinner | Stay: Teahouse, Phakding

The morning flight — departing from Ramechhap in peak season. Furthermore, the trail descends through pine forest to Phakding at 2,800m. Consequently, Day 1 is deliberately short — the body has gained significant altitude and the Phakding rest.

Day 02 — Gateway to the Khumbu — Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,438m)

Altitude: 3,438m | Trek: 5–6 hrs | Ascent: +638m | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Stay: Teahouse, Namche

The trail climbs north through suspension bridges, enters Sagarmatha National Park at Jorsale, and ascends steeply to Namche. Furthermore, the first Everest view appears through the ridge gap below town. Namche at 3,438m begins the expedition’s most critical acclimatisation phase — two nights that make everything above 4,000m safer.

Day 03 — Climb High, Sleep Low — Acclimatisation Day in Namche

Altitude: 3,438m overnight / 3,880m hike | Hike: 3–4 hrs | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Stay: Teahouse, Namche

The acclimatisation hike climbs to the Everest View Hotel ridge at 3,880m. Furthermore, this day is non-negotiable in this itinerary — the body needs 24–48 hours at 3,438m before it can perform above 4,000m. Consequently, use the afternoon for the Sagarmatha National Park Museum and a full gear check with your guide.

Day 04 — Monastery and Forest — Namche to Debuche via Tengboche (3,820m)

Altitude: 3,820m | Trek: 5–6 hrs | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Stay: Teahouse, Debuche

The trail rises through rhododendron and juniper forest to Tengboche. Furthermore, morning light at Tengboche is one of the finest moments on the approach. The trail descends to Debuche through deep forest.

Day 05 — High Alpine Country — Debuche to Dingboche (4,410m)

Altitude: 4,410m | Trek: 5–6 hrs | Ascent: +590m | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Stay: Teahouse, Dingboche

Above Pangboche the vegetation thins and the high alpine landscape begins. The trail passes Ama Dablam Base Camp before reaching Dingboche at 4,410m. Furthermore, this is the departure point for the Chhukung Valley that leads to base camp. Eat fully and rest completely — tomorrow’s hike is essential.

Day 06 — Crossing 5,000m — Acclimatisation Hike to Nagarjun Hill

Altitude: 5,000m high point / 4,410m overnight | Hike: 4–5 hrs | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Stay: Teahouse, Dingboche

The acclimatisation hike climbs to Nagarjun Hill at 5,000m — the first time above 5,000m on the expedition. Furthermore, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Makalu, and Baruntse spread across the full horizon from the top. Sleeping at 4,410m after a 5,000m hike is the most effective acclimatisation method available. Consequently, tonight the body adapts for the push toward Lobuche at 4,910m tomorrow.

Day 07 — The Memorial Cairns — Dingboche to Lobuche (4,910m)

Altitude: 4,910m | Trek: 4–5 hrs | Ascent: +500m | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Stay: Teahouse, Lobuche

The trail climbs past the Thukla memorial cairns to Everest climbers and Sherpas, then onto the Khumbu Glacier moraine. Furthermore, Lobuche at 4,910m is noticeably thinner-aired. Consequently, headaches and reduced appetite are normal — report every symptom to your guide, hydrate aggressively, sleep early.

Day 08 — Everest Base Camp — Lobuche to Gorakshep and EBC (5,364m)

Altitude: 5,160m overnight / 5,364m at EBC | Total: 6–7 hrs | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Stay: Teahouse, Gorakshep

The glacier moraine trail reaches Gorakshep at 5,160m. Daypacks stay here for the 2-hour walk to Everest Base Camp at 5,364m. Furthermore, EBC is a working expedition base at the foot of the Khumbu Icefall — not a viewpoint. Consequently, what you feel at 5,364m looking up at the icefall is a moment that cannot be described in advance. Return to Gorakshep for the night.

Day 09 — Sunrise Above the World — Kala Patthar (5,545m) to Lobuche (4,910m)

High point: 5,545m | Overnight: 4,910m | Total: 6–7 hrs | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Stay: Teahouse, Lobuche

Alarm at 4:30am. The trail climbs to Kala Patthar in darkness. Then sunrise — Everest’s southwest face turning gold at 5,545m with Nuptse, Lhotse, and Pumori on the full horizon. This is the finest mountain sunrise viewpoint on earth. Furthermore, after the moment passes the team descends to Lobuche for a recovery night before the Chhukung phase begins tomorrow.

Island Peak Climbing Itinerary — Chhukung and Climbing Phase (Days 10–12)

Day 10 — Into the Eastern Valley — Lobuche to Chhukung (4,730m)

Altitude: 4,730m | Trek: 4–5 hrs | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Stay: Teahouse, Chhukung

The trail descends from Lobuche through Dingboche and branches east into the Chhukung Valley. Furthermore, Chhukung at 4,730m is the last teahouse settlement before Island Peak Base Camp. Consequently, the evening at Chhukung is for final equipment checks.

Day 11 — Moving to Base Camp — Chhukung to Island Peak Base Camp (4,970m)

Altitude: 4,970m | Trek: 3–4 hrs + training | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Stay: Tented camp, Island Peak Base Camp

The team moves to Island Peak Base Camp at 4,970m — the headwall and glacier visible directly above. Furthermore, the afternoon is the technical training session. Consequently, every team member completes the training before the 3:00am summit departure. Rest early. This is the final night before the headwall.

Day 12 — The Summit — Island Peak (6,189m) to Dingboche (4,260m)

Summit: 6,189m | Overnight: 4,260m | Total: 10–14 hrs | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Stay: Teahouse, Dingboche

This is the day.

The team departs at 3:00am. The glacier approach leads to the base of the headwall — crampons on, harness clipped, ice axe in hand. The fixed lines begin on the steep snow and ice face. Furthermore, the headwall is 200m of sustained steep climbing at over 6,000m in darkness. The summit of Island Peak at 6,189m delivers Lhotse’s south face filling the sky immediately above, Makalu and Baruntse to the east.

Consequently, after the summit the descent returns to base camp, tents are packed. It is the longest day of the expedition. It is worth every hour of preparation that made it possible.

Island Peak Climbing Itinerary — Descent Phase (Days 13–15)

Day 13 — Breathing Easy — Dingboche to Namche Bazaar (3,438m)

Altitude: 3,438m | Trek: 6–7 hrs | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Stay: Teahouse, Namche

The long descent drops from Dingboche through Tengboche back to Namche. Furthermore, breathing becomes noticeably easier below 4,000m and energy returns quickly. Namche’s hot showers, bakeries, and electricity feel genuinely earned after the headwall push. Consequently, use the Namche evening to charge devices, eat well, and tip your guide and climbing Sherpa in cash.

Day 14 — The Final Trail — Namche Bazaar to Lukla (2,860m)

Altitude: 2,860m | Trek: 5–6 hrs | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Stay: Teahouse, Lukla

The final trekking day follows the lower Dudh Koshi valley through the Hillary Bridge back to Lukla. Furthermore, the trail carries a different quality on the descent — 14 days of altitude and the headwall summit behind every step. Confirm the morning flight time, pack luggage within carry-on limits, and sleep early.

Day 15 — Fly Lukla to Kathmandu

Flight: 35 min | Meals: Breakfast

The morning flight returns to Kathmandu. The Island Peak climbing itinerary ends on landing. 17 days. Everest Base Camp. Kala Patthar. Island Peak at 6,189m. Done.

Important: Always build 2–3 buffer days into your Kathmandu schedule after this flight. Lukla departures are weather-dependent — never book a connecting international flight on Day 15 or the day after your scheduled Lukla return.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the Island Peak climbing itinerary?

The standard Island Peak climbing itinerary is 17 days from Lukla to Lukla. Furthermore, this 17-day structure does not include a built-in contingency day. Consequently, Lukla weather delays are most common in October and November when the expedition is most popular.

What is the hardest day in the Island Peak climbing itinerary?

Day 12 — the summit day — is the hardest overall: 10–14 hours starting at 3:00am from base camp at 4,970m, the glacier approach, the 200m steep headwall on fixed lines, the 6,189m summit. Furthermore, the headwall in darkness before dawn at over 6,000m is the most physically demanding section of any Mountain Hike Nepal expedition. Consequently, upper body endurance and steep fixed line confidence are the specific physical qualities this day demands most.

Why does the Island Peak itinerary include Everest Base Camp?

The EBC approach — two nights at Namche, two nights at Dingboche, the Nagarjun Hill hike to 5,000m. Furthermore, without this progression the body simply cannot perform on a 6,000m+ technical headwall. Consequently, the EBC approach is not optional scenery — it is the engineered altitude preparation that underpins every summit success on this itinerary.

The Itinerary Is Clear. The Summit Is Achievable.

The Island Peak climbing itinerary is 17 days that reward specific preparation more than any other single factor. Use this guide to understand what each day asks — the altitude, the hours, the technical sections. Train specifically for Day 7 and the Day 12 headwall. Prepare the upper body for the fixed lines. Arrive at Lukla knowing this expedition. Trekkers who do that consistently reach the 6,189m summit.
